Profamille

Profamille is a psycho-education program for family members of patients suffering from schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia, which affects 1% of the population, is a major public health problem. However, its importance, cost and real impact are still largely ignored by many health decision-makers.

The Profamille programme has proven its effectiveness in reducing re-hospitalizations of patients, improving their access to employment and improving the quality of life and health of families.

By giving them the keys to better understand the disease and their loved one, the Program allows families to better manage daily life situations and better support the family member suffering from schizophrenia.

Psychoeducation of the family members is the approach that, coupled with drug treatment, has shown the highest level of effectiveness on the patients. Recent meta-analyses demonstrate a relapse rate divided by 2 in the following years when psycho-educational care is offered to families.

Profamille is currently by far the most widely used program dedicated to family members in the French-speaking countries and the only one that has been evaluated for its effectiveness. However, its existence is constantly threatened and some French regions and French-speaking countries are not yet covered by the programme.
